Grandfather Clock
A grandfather clock is a freestanding and weight-driven
clock. It makes use of a pendulum within its case to power it. Other
terms used for this design include longcase, tall-case, or floor clock.
Occasionally, clocks designed in the same style as a grandfather clock
are called grandmother or granddaughter clocks. There is no specified
difference between these terms. However, many people use granddaughter
to refer to styles below around five feet, grandmother to refer to clocks
over that size but less than about six feet, and grandfather for all
taller clocks.
A grandfather clock is most commonly created in an ornamental, antique
style. They have existed since the 1600s. The first creation of one
is attributed to William Clement in the year 1670.
